27 October 09 : Skillauto’s search for the best automotive technician begins
Outstanding automotive technicians who wish to showcase their skills can now put themselves to the test by entering the Skillauto 2010 competition.
The aim of Skillauto is to identify and promote the exceptional talent of people working in the automotive industry, who may in turn have the opportunity to compete with the best from across the world at the prestigious WorldSkills event.
If you are a technician, this competition will allow you to show your employer, friends and family that you are one of the best and can give you the confidence to pursue your career to the highest level. If you are an automotive employer, the national recognition of the skills of your outstanding technician will enhance your reputation and contribute to the ongoing success and profitability of your company.
Skillauto runs competitions across three disciplines; autobody repair, car painting and light vehicle (service and maintenance). These competitions are designed to test competence in the application of the latest advancements in technology providing candidates with the opportunity to develop their skills further. The competitions are also focused on the needs of industry, with those competing to demonstrate their skills in the areas which make the UK automotive sector synonymous with quality services and sustainable profitable businesses.
If you have no more than 3 years experience including training and think you are capable of competing with the top technicians in the UK, then please click here to register and take the online test.
Those technicians who make the finals of the Skillauto competitions may also have the chance to take part in WorldSkills 2011 which is being held in London, providing the added incentive of UK technicians achieving honours on home soil. At the 2009 WorldSkills competition held in Calgary the UK automotive competitors won a bronze medal and two medallions of excellence.
Lesley Woolley, Head of Professional Development, who manages Skillauto activity at the IMI said:
"These competitions are a great way for automotive technicians to demonstrate their skill and ability against the very best in the industry. Skillauto helps to build confidence and ambition of the technicians who take part and enables employers to inject pride, ambition and recognition into their workforce."
08 September 09 : Success for the UK automotive team at WorldSkills Calgary 2009
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has applauded the achievements of the UK automotive team on their
performance at the 2009 Worldskills competition in Canada.
Twenty two year old Daniel Cain from Grimsby, who is City and Guilds qualified, won a bronze medal in the autobody repair category and there were also medallions of excellence awarded to Dean Jones and Zak McLaughlan in automobile technology and car painting respectively.

Over four days of tough competition, 900 young people from across the world test themselves against rigorous international standards at the WorldSkills event, with the ultimate prize of winning gold, silver or bronze for their country. The UK automotive team has a good track record at previous WorldSkills competitions, in 2005, Andrew Blair won a gold medal in autobody repair in Helsinki, and in Japan in 2007, Jonathan Lloyd and Simon Noble each scooped a bronze medal in autobody repair and vehicle painting, respectively. All the automotive competitors achieve their places following a tough selection process via regional and national Skillauto competitions.
Commenting on the success of the UK trio, Sarah Sillars, Chief Executive at the IMI said:
"Congratulations to Daniel on winning a bronze medal and to Dean and Zak for achieving medallions of excellence. Their medals are fantastic news not only for the individuals involved but also for the motor industry as a whole as their achievements demonstrate the high-level of skill needed to work in today’s automotive sector."

"What Team UK has achieved is outstanding. They have all worked so hard to get to where they are and that has certainly paid off. Once again we have shown that we have the very best young talent in our country. It’s a tremendous result not just for the competitors, but for their employers, trainers and colleges. We hope to build on this success as we move towards the next WorldSkills Competition, which London will be hosting in 2011, where we hope to do even better. We are extremely proud of each and every one of them and can say that they are amongst the best in the world at their chosen skill. I send my heartfelt congratulations to the whole Team and look forward to welcoming them back to the UK."

True grit
Endurance racing is one of the ultimate tests of man and machine. 2007 Worldskills finalist, Dan Glover (click on image for full size image), was among those who took part in the UK?s version of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours at Silverstone.
There's motor racing and there's endurance motorsport. Think of a Formula One race and multiply it by twelve. Over sixty cars in five different classes, racing into the sunset, through the night, welcoming the sunrise and knowing there are still eight hours to go. Throw in a smattering of accidents, pit lane dramas and a bunch of guys from BBC?s Top Gear programme and you have a blend of high octane excitement which is both exhilarating and exhausting.
Launched in 2005, the Britcar 24 Hours of Silverstone is the jewel in the calendar of the European Endurance and Racing Club, which has brought a major 24-hour race back to the UK after an absence of more than a decade.
Among the field this year was a Nissan 350Z run by Shawn Taylor Racing with support from Automotive Distributors, IMI, Mondial UK and Snap-on. Assisting a crack squad of technicians, was Dan Glover, the UK?s finalist for the Worldskills competition, who joined a team of apprentices and lecturers from Warwickshire College, which had helped the team last year.
As the race got into its stride, things were going well with the Nissan moving up the field steadily to 27th place but in the sixth hour, the differential began to overheat, leading to the failure of the seals. Ultimately, the car had to be retired but not before a valiant effort by all concerned.
All the team and sponsors wish Dan the best of luck in Japan in November.
